Teach English

Teaching English has long been a way for travellers to live, work and play their way around the world. This is because English is a language that millions around the world wish to learn.

In fact, many travellers are able to find positions in countries they wouldn’t normally be allowed to work in.

For instance, Argentina doesn’t have a working holiday visa arrangement with Australia or the UK and so people from these countries can only holiday there.

However, travellers have found jobs in English Language Schools. This is because the schools need teachers to teach English and if they cannot find someone in their own country to teach English they will sponsor an English Language Teacher from another country.

Where is the work?

Many countries have English Language Schools. You may find there is a glut of English teachers in some countries, such as Japan, but there are still positions to be had. Some countries are calling out for English teachers such as Russia, the Eastern bloc countries, some Asian countries, Turkey and some South American countries.

How to find English teaching work

Travellers find English teaching positions in a number of ways. The Internet is a good source of employment. There are a number of websites where English language schools advertise for teachers. Others find positions by entering a particular country on a tourist visa before approaching schools. If the school wants to employ you they should help you change your visa status from holiday to work permit.

Do you need a qualification to teach?

It should be stressed that just because you can speak English, doesn't mean you can teach it. Many travellers have found this out when they have taken positions teaching English without a formal qualification.

Although positions for teaching English arise where no formal qualification is required, the majority of schools require their teachers to hold a qualification.

Most travellers opt to obtain either the internationally recognised University of Cambridge/Royal Society of Arts Courses (Cambridge/RSA) Certificate or the Trinity Certificate in Teaching English administered by Trinity College, Dublin. Having either of these two certificates is highly regarded and is a prerequisite to teach in many schools around the world. These courses are offered at many institutions around the world and by correspondence over the Internet.
