Over 30 - Don't get your walking stick out just yet

An increasing number of people are wanting to travel for extended periods of time where they immerse themselves in the local culture or offer their services either as a paid worker or volunteer.

If you are researching a working holiday, gap year or career break overseas no doubt you have discovered that working holiday visas are only issued to those aged between 18 and 30 years inclusive. So what do you do if you are 31 years and over? Stay home? Not likely.

Here are some suggestions:

  • See what other visas are available, ie. student, entrepreneurial, business, etc. many travellers apply for a student visa and study the local language.
  • Consider your heritage. If you have a parent or grandparent born in another country you might qualify for a passport for that country;
  • Undertake a course to Teach English. With a Teaching English qualification you can write your own ticket to work in most of the world's countries, particularly Eastern Europe, Asia and South America.
  • Work on a cruise liner as they prefer staff with qualifications and experience.
  • Crew a yacht. There is no upper age limit to do this. If you don't want to sail there are positions helping captains during their boat's time in dry dock, ie. cleaning the hull, painting the deck, etc. Visit;
  • Volunteer on a kibbutz. Many kibbutzes take people up to the age of 70;
  • Volunteer on a worthwhile project;
  • Be a camp counselr in the USA-they take applicants up to the age of 35 and sometimes older;
  • Sell items while on the road;
  • Offer your services in return for free accommodation and board or offer your services for cash, ie. if you are a hairdresser, offer to cut fellow traveller's hair at a reduced price;
  • Travel and work in your own country.
